How to add texture to straight hair
Growing up, little emphasis was put on the care of my hair.
The extent of product used was a bit of Suave Kids Detangling Spray, a two-in-one shampoo/conditioner combo, and probably some remnants of the bath crayons my mom bribed me with to wash up.
With naturally auburn hair that has a slight bend, depending truly on the day, I put little-to-no thought into styling every morning. (On the hair texture scale, it's a 1B.) I’m a survivor of frying any moisture out of my hair from ages 14 to 18, leading to chronic dead ends and frizziness, but recently, I’m dedicated to adding any sort of life that emulates that easy-going, tousled-ness that Jennifer Anniston has mastered.
To clean it: OGX Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo
I know that this product did, in fact, go viral for causing people to go bald, but I’ve got a full head of clean hair, and have since 2013. I started using this in middle school, and while I’ve strayed away sometimes, I always end up coming back. It really gives my hair that pristine feeling that I crave.
To moisturize it: OGX Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco Conditioner
My previously mentioned product’s partner-in-crime, this conditioner truly has a great, silky consistency that makes my hair feel super soft to the touch, and restores any moisture that was lost during the winter months in New England that I’m forced to endure.
To secure it: Ouai Texturizing Hair Spray
I’m a sucker for cute packaging and celebrity endorsements, so I asked for Ouai’s texturizing hair spray for Christmas a few years back, and I’ve been hooked ever since. It doesn’t give that helmet-esque texture that a lot of hair sprays do, and gives my dull, drab hair effortless volume.
To finish it off: Ouai Hair Oil
I discovered hair oil after my roommate told me it would make my heat-damaged hair less…damaged. The scent matches the hairspray above perfectly and isn’t so heavy that it feels like I greased up my hair post-wash. I apply it after the shower to damp hair, starting at the ends and working up, then set it with a towel for about ten minutes.
To freshen up: Batiste Dry Shampoo
I try to only wash my hair 3 to 4 times a week (which, for many, is far too much), but living in a state that has hard water highly concentrated with calcium, my hair becomes greasy about 24 hours post-wash. The Batiste dry shampoo, located at my local Target, does a great job soaking up all of the excess oil, without leaving an atrociously fruity smell. Pro-tip: spray your hair up and then let it soak overnight, you’ll have voluptuous volume and hair that looks washed.
